The Issue With Access: Conducting Observational Research in the Post-Pandemic Era
The challenge I often face, along with my clients, is one of access: how can we effectively gain access to the point of care, especially when no previous relationship is established with providers or institutions? Below, I describe the challenges faced in the healthcare research landscape since the pandemic and a few approaches I’ve used to open doors and start meaningful conversations with healthcare professionals.
The Challenge of Getting On-Site
While institutional and governmental policies are designed to protect patient privacy, they can also impede innovation, slowing the advancement of healthcare solutions that improve patient care. In fact, "the process of obtaining patient consent, navigating compliance regulations, and gaining institutional approval can introduce delays that compromise the timeliness of healthcare innovations" (Harvard Business Review, 2020).
Driving innovation in healthcare requires a thorough understanding of the context in which care takes place. Researchers need to find creative ways to access the point of care. As a researcher with over 15 years of experience in healthcare, I understand the power of understanding the point of care and how treatment is delivered. My approach extends beyond the traditional reliance on Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and familiar healthcare centers, allowing me to engage with more diverse and underrepresented healthcare providers. According to a 2020 study published by the Journal of Medical Internet Research, “engaging with clinicians from a variety of settings leads to richer insights into how devices and tools are actually used in practice” (Jones et al., 2020).
Challenged to Make a Connection? Consider Creative Recruitment Strategies
Sometimes, finding viable research candidates within healthcare settings or highly regulated industries can be difficult. While specialized recruitment partners offer a solution, they are often costly and time-consuming. I’ve found great success using in-house recruiters who tap into LinkedIn and other professional networks to identify potential research candidates.
Getting creative with your approach can be crucial in uncovering insights that your competitors may have missed. Alternative recruitment strategies, such as partnering with local organizations or using digital platforms, can provide direct access to otherwise hard-to-reach populations.
Struggling with Administration? Establish an Internal Ally and Push Outward
When working with healthcare facilities or other restricted sites, it’s vital to identify an influential individual within the institution who can help move the research forward. A study from The American Journal of Managed Care underscores this approach, noting that “having a trusted internal ally often serves as a key factor in bypassing administrative barriers” (Smith & Wells, 2019). Empowering that ally, whether a leading surgeon or senior administrator, can help you navigate the organization’s complex approval processes.
Challenged to Gain Buy-In? Connect to a Mutual Cause
Healthcare administrators are often protective of their patients, and researchers must acknowledge and respect their concerns. Highlighting a shared goal—advancing care delivery and improving patient outcomes—can break down resistance. As Healthcare Executive emphasizes, “aligning research objectives with institutional goals fosters collaboration and ensures that both parties are invested in the success of the initiative” (Taylor, 2021).
Still Facing Privacy Concerns? Consider Less Invasive Methods
In some cases, privacy concerns may arise, especially when video recording is involved. I’ve encountered this challenge and successfully mitigated it by suggesting alternative methods such as remote observations or using enactments instead of live procedures.
Concluding Thoughts
When approaching research within hospitals or other restricted sites, it’s critical to be well-prepared, highlight shared goals, and demonstrate flexibility. In my experience, overcoming access challenges is key to unlocking critical insights and driving meaningful change.
